What is Harm Reduction?

Harm reduction uses practical, evidence-based strategies to reduce the negative consequences of drug use. Like wearing a seatbelt or helmet, these approaches help people stay safer and healthier. In Oklahoma, harm reduction programs provide tools and support that meet people where they are while connecting individuals who are ready to access treatment and other health services.

Through prevention tools and strategies, harm reduction saves lives and cuts cost in Oklahoma.

What is Naloxone?

Naloxone is a medication designed to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. At HOPE, we offer free IM naloxone (naloxone suitable for intramuscular injection – like an EpiPen) and Narcan (brand-name naloxone in the form of a single-use nasal spray.) Both delivery methods are equally effective. Naloxone temporarily reverses the effects of opioids on an individual’s brain and respiratory system, allowing a person to regain consciousness and breathe normally while awaiting emergency medical assistance. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist, meaning it is effective for reversing overdose caused by opioids such as heroin, fentanyl, and oxycodone. For non-opioid drugs, naloxone is ineffective but not harmful, to those experiencing an overdose. Therefore, even if you are unsure of why a person might be experiencing an overdose, naloxone is safe to administer.

At HOPE, we encourage anyone to carry naloxone who might encounter someone experiencing an overdose. This includes friends and loved ones of those who may use drugs, and even folks who interact with the public on a daily basis.

Either form of naloxone is easy and safe to administer. Click HERE for info on how to administer nasal Narcan. Narcan and naloxone are available in our lobby or through one of our harm-reduction vending machines (located in the lobby, outside the HOPE clinic, and at the Colvin Center at OSU in Stillwater.)
